Zephyrhills, Florida -- Pasco Sheriff's deputies say the death of a man found in a mobile home fire is now a murder investigation.

Deputies say they believe the fire was set to the Zephyrhills mobile home intentionally to cover evidence of the murder of 58-year-old Richard Massey. His cause of death is not being released at this time as detectives investigate.

Massey's body was found around 4:00 a.m. and from the beginning Pasco County detectives thought the fire suspicious in nature.

Family members at a home next to the mobile home told 10 News they were shocked, and they loved Massey very much.

Neighbors said they heard gunshots before they came out to see the mobile home in flames.

"It sounded like shell casings exploding, like gunfire," said neighbor Christopher West.

"I live close by and I did not hear anything, but my neighbors who live even closer said they heard many gunshots go off," said neighbor Elnora Carter.

Carter just moved into the neighborhood two days ago but she has lived there on and off the last four years.

"I have never really felt safe here," Carter said. "It looked like deputies were searching for shell casings earlier, but I don't think that makes sense if it was a fire."

Deputies taped off the mobile home and the lot it sat on all Sunday afternoon. They went through pieces of the property, but blocked the burned home from curious neighbors and cameras with their county vehicles.

Deputies are asking the public for help. If you have any information, call the Pasco County Sheriff's Office at 727-844-7711.
