School board considers photo, video restriction

NEW PORT RICHEY, Florida (AP) - A Tampa Bay area school board is considering whether to limit students' rights to take and post photos and videos from school on the Internet without getting permission first.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that the Pasco County School Board asked for such a policy in December because too many "inappropriate" images were popping up from schools on sites like YouTube and Facebook. They said they wanted to protect students from having items posted without their knowledge or consent.

The board backed off after its attorney warned about the potential pitfalls of trying to place rules on students' First Amendment rights.

The board was scheduled to discuss the proposed policy Tuesday, take public comment and then make a decision at a future meeting.
