Superintendent Announces Revised Proposal for Moore Mickens

Land O’ Lakes, FL – After listening to students and members of the Dade City community, Superintendent Kurt Browning announced today that he will not recommend closing Moore Mickens Education Center.

“I have heard the heartfelt pleas from Moore Mickens students, graduates, staff, and supporters, and I cannot in good conscience move forward with the recommendation to close the school at this time,” said Superintendent Browning.

The superintendent noted that staff and the School Board now will have to find the nearly $1 million in associated cost savings elsewhere if employees are going to get any type of raise next year.  District staff has not received pay increases in six years.

While the school will not close, under the revised proposal one program still will be moved.  The Early Head Start (pre-k) program will move to Pasco Elementary School beginning in the 2013/2014 school year.

“The pre-k program belongs at an elementary school with students of that same age group,” said the Superintendent.

The Cyesis teen parent program, FAPE 22 program for Exceptional Education students from age 18 to 22, Adult Education, and the Support our Students (SOS) last-chance program all will remain at Moore Mickens.
