Longleaf Elementary School gets special visit from Chance the Boxer

Pasco County, Florida -- A representative of the Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) Division recently visited Longleaf Elementary School in New Port Richey accompanied by Chance the Boxer.

Chance originally arrived at PCAS this past May as part of an animal hoarding case. He was malnourished, severely underweight, and had medical complications. He is now a healthy eight month old Boxer, who is being trained to be a therapy dog, and is visiting schools in Pasco County.

Pasco County Animal Services started the Animal Foster Program in February 2013 and since then over 150 dogs and cats have been placed in loving homes. The foster program provides opportunities for animals to be placed in temporary homes while waiting to move into the adoption program.  Fostering is also a way to try out an animal and see how it fits in with the family before deciding to adopt.

“Chance was given a second chance at life through the Pasco County Animal Services Foster Program and now the kids that he visits are given a chance to escape some hardships of life through his love. I hope that we can continue to spread Chance's good spirit with other children in the county” said Mr. Christopher Blaine.

The visit to the school with Chance was the first of many as PCAS explores the development of a formal program utilizing volunteers and pets as a form of therapy. Ms. Adriana Galva, PreK ASD Instructor at Longleaf Elementary School stated "The visit from PCAS was a great experience for our special needs students, as they were able to interact with Chance. Most of our students have never been exposed to animals and this was a perfect opportunity to teach them how to be gentle and kind."

Chance the Boxer was given a second chance and there are many more animals like him available for foster or adoption. Thinking of fostering or adopting an animal, please visit Pasco County Animal Services http://www.pascocountyfl.net/Index.aspx?NID=408 or contact (727) 834-3400.
