Police identify body found in a Hudson canal

Hudson, Florida -- The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has identified the man's body found floating in a Hudson area canal Wednesday as 63-year-old Richard John Thomas.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene and police say foul play is not suspected.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to determine his cause of death.

St. Petersburg, Florida (AP) -- Progress Energy Florida says it is converting one of its Tampa Bay-area power plants to 100-percent natural gas.

The company said Thursday that converting the Anclote Power Plant in Holiday to natural gas will reduce emissions and allow compliance with new federal standards.

The Pasco County plant currently uses oil and natural gas. The conversion will eliminate most of the metals and sulfur dioxide that are now emitted from its two steam units.

Port Richey mayor resigns after IRS problems

PORT RICHEY, Florida (AP) - The mayor of Port Richey resigned from the office he's held for five years, saying the IRS plans to pursue legal action against him for under-reporting his income.

Richard Rober made the announcement Wednesday, with his wife Averill by his side. He says the resignation takes effect Saturday.

The Tampa Bay Times reports that 52-year-old Rober said the IRS informed him of the action about two weeks ago.

Hudson, Florida -- Pasco County Sheriff's deputies are investigating an incident where a man's body was found in a Hudson canal Wednesday.

According to the sheriff's office, they received a call around 2:43 p.m. that a body was seen in a canal near Albatross Lane in the Sea Ranch subdivision.

It is not known at this time if foul play was involved.

Silver Alert issued for 79-year-old Land O' Lakes man

LAND O' LAKES, Fla. -- The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has issued a Silver Alert for 79-year-old Norvell Hunt.

Deputies say he left his home in Land O' Lakes at approximately 10 a.m. to go to a local business. He never arrived and his current whereabouts are unknown.

Hunt is described as 6'2", and 180 lbs. Deputies say he has Alzheimer's-related dementia. He drives a red Kia Rondo station wagon with the Florida tag 370IBR.

Anyone who may have seen Hunt is asked to contact the PCSO at 727-844-7711.

Pasco County, Florida -- On March 23, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council (TBRPC) awarded Pasco County the coveted One Bay Award, effectively elevating the county to elite status among Tampa Bay communities.

TBRPC is the regional expert when it comes to land planning and development. This is the second year Pasco County was chosen for the OneBay award--and also only the second year the award has been in existence.
