Sushi Alive agrees to pay $54,000 in back wages after investigation

Tampa, FL -- Sushi Alive in Tampa has agreed to pay $54,407 in minimum wage and overtime back wages to 14 restaurant employees, following an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division that uncovered violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act’s minimum wage, overtime and record-keeping provisions.

In a release from the U.S. Department of Labor, the investigation found that Sushi Alive required servers to share their tips with dishwashers, cooks and other kitchen staff employees who did not customarily earn tips, invalidating the pool arrangement.

The employer also violated the law by deducting the cost of uniforms from servers’ paychecks, which reduced their wages below the federal minimum wage.
