70 Pasco schools earn state's 'Golden School Award'

Pasco County, Florida -- On Tuesday, May 17, the Pasco County School District announced that 75 Pasco schools received top honors in the state's ranking of volunteerism on campuses throughout Florida. This is the statement released by the District:

It is our pleasure to announce that 70 Pasco County schools have earned the Florida Department of Education Golden School Award for the 2010 – 2011 school year. In addition, five secondary schools have completed the requirements for FDOE's Silver School Award. 

The Golden School Award is given annually by the Florida Department of Education to recognize schools with exemplary volunteer programs. A Golden School must meet the following criteria:

  • 80% of staff trained in volunteerism;
  • Has a designated School Volunteer Coordinator;
  • Total volunteer hours equal at least twice the number of students enrolled.

The Silver School Award is presented annually by the Florida Department of Education to recognize secondary schools that, in addition to having a Volunteer Coordinator and training, also have:
Students who provide exemplary volunteer services to elementary and other secondary schools;
Student volunteer hours equal to at least half the sending school’s enrollment.
