Book Club to discuss 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close'

Land O' Lakes, Florida -- Do you love reading? Are you looking to engage in conversations with other book lovers? There is a local Book Club that is ongoing at the Rasmussen College Land O' Lakes campus at 18600 Fernview Street (Corner of 54 & Sunlake).

The new college campus was opened in the last year and it is becoming a hot spot for community meetings. This week they are discussing the book "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". Yes, this book inspired the 2011 movie starring Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks.

Lutz school earns prestigious environmental award

Lutz, Florida -- A Lutz school was among 78 schools in 29 states named as first-ever Green Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education Monday morning.

According to the DOE, Learning Gate Community School was recognized for their commitment to reducing environmental impacts, improving the health and academic performance of students and staff, and increasing the number of graduates that are environmentally and sustainability literate.

Sheriff's Office team named "Crossing Guards of the Year"

New Port Richey, Florida- A team of school crossing guards assigned to New Port Richey's Schrader Elementary School has been named the Florida Department of Transportation's School Crossing Guards of the Year.

Robert Johnson and Antonio Alves have worked at Little Roach and Star Trail each school day protecting kids from dangerous traffic for the past eight years.

In 2008, Johnson suffered an injured left knee when he was hit by a car trying to protect a group of children getting ready to cross.

McDonald's offers free FCAT breakfasts Monday morning

Tampa, Florida-- According to a recent release, more than 800 McDonald's restaurants in the state of Florida will provide a free breakfast to students on April 16, the first day of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT).

Students in grades three-11 can enjoy a complimentary Egg McMuffin, Apple Slices, and a low-fat milk or orange juice from any of the 188 McDonald's restaurants in the Tampa Bay area. 

Be sure to get there between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. to take advantage of this offer!

Trinity, Florida -- The largest cancer fundraiser in the world is returning to the Trinity area May 5. The Relay for Life of Trinity event has raised over $1 million since 2003 and came in 23rd out of 356 Relay for Life events throughout the state last year.

This year's Relay for Life of Trinity will mark its 10th anniversary. The 18-hour overnight event will be held at the Mitchell High School stadium, located at 2323 Little Road, starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 4 and last all the way until noon on Saturday, May 5.

Lutz, Florida -- Do you remember when you were a kid and you were taught never to take candy from strangers? Nowadays, it is beyond this one simple lesson.

Let's face it, with the internet and 24-hour news channels, the dangers our children are presented with seems to be lurking around every corner. It is more important than ever for our children to be well-informed beyond the simple candy lure.

On March 21, Lutz Preparatory School's P.T.A. did just that by presenting Stranger Danger and Other Safety Tips.

Free Financial Success Classes

Dade City, Florida -- Habitat Classes are currently held on Monday nights.

March Classes will be at the Dade City Business Center (located at Hwy 301 & Lock Street), 15000 Citrus Country Dr. in Dade City on the second floor in the Scott Black Room.

Starting in April, the classes will be held across the street at the New Habitat building, 15017 US Hwy 301 in Dade City. Classes are FREE, open to the public, and always start at 6 p.m.
