New technology camp to open for disadvantaged students

Pasco County (via Pasco County Schools) -- The District School Board of Pasco County is delighted to announce the first annual Title I Summer Technology Camp for Pasco’s most economically disadvantaged students.  This exciting program will give students the opportunity to work one-on-one with state of the art technology.  Specifically, students will be given the opportunity to produce and edit his or her very own video podcast.

Integrating technology with writing standards will help to increase academic proficiency while reinforcing the 21st Century learning skills they need for future success.

“This is just one of the many ways we are working to bridge the digital divide for our economically disadvantaged students,” stated Superintendent Heather Fiorentino.

Pasco Co. school board approves massive budget cuts

Land O' Lakes, Florida - For the first time in school district history, hundreds of Pasco County school employees are being laid off due to the largest single year budget cut in district history.

Around 8:30 p.m., school board members voted unanimously to approve the cuts. Chairman of the school board Joanne Hurley said principals will call teachers to their offices in the next few days to deliver the news that they've been fired.

Georgiann Jones, a teacher at Sunray Elementary School in Holiday, addressed the board during the public comment section of the meeting and said, "We understand the absolute devastation with our budget, however, we are really concerned about the environments of our schools when we are already being asked to do so much, and we will, but we don't have any money coming in that will help us out."
