70 Pasco schools earn state's 'Golden School Award'

Pasco County, Florida -- On Tuesday, May 17, the Pasco County School District announced that 75 Pasco schools received top honors in the state's ranking of volunteerism on campuses throughout Florida. This is the statement released by the District:

It is our pleasure to announce that 70 Pasco County schools have earned the Florida Department of Education Golden School Award for the 2010 – 2011 school year. In addition, five secondary schools have completed the requirements for FDOE's Silver School Award. 

The Golden School Award is given annually by the Florida Department of Education to recognize schools with exemplary volunteer programs. A Golden School must meet the following criteria:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (AP) -- A Pasco County woman has pleaded guilty to making threats last year that prompted an hours-long lockdown at the nation's sixth-largest school system.

Ellisa Martinez entered the plea Monday at a hearing in Fort Lauderdale federal court. The 48-year-old New Port Richey woman admitted sending e-mail and telephone threats involving guns and schools to a conservative radio talk show host.

The Nov. 10 lockdown affected some 275,000 students at 300 Broward County schools. Martinez fled Florida and was later arrested by the FBI in Southern California.

Land O' Lakes, FL -- Most high schools have one valedictorian and a single salutatorian. That's not the case at Land O' Lakes where six students are at the top of the class this year.

Sherri London, a writer for the Land O' Lakes Patch recently sat down with these high achievers to talk about the honor.  Here are their names and ranking.

Zachary Higgins, 17 - Class ranking: Traditional valedictorian with a 4.61 grade point average.

Allyssa Webb, 17 - Class ranking: Traditional salutatorian with a 4.428 GPA

Victoria Padgett, 17 - Class ranking: IB valedictorian with a 4.738 GPA

Wenyi Gu, 18 - Class ranking: IB valedictorian with a 4.738 GPA

Erin Chow, 18 - Class ranking: IB valedictorian with a 4.738 GPA

Local students create "Solar Tree," win big at world's largest science competition

Local students create "Solar Tree," win big at world's largest science competition

Three elementary school students from Countryside Montessori Charter in Land O Lakes were just announced as national winners in the 2011 Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Awards, the world's largest K-12 student science and technology competition. 

They are now heading to Washington, DC to meet with Congressional representatives and receive a $5,000 Savings Bond each! 

The team, comprised of 2nd-3rd grade students, earned second place in the K-3rd grade category for envisioning a potential solution for literally “growing” power with The Solar T.R.E.E. (an acronym which stands for Tree generating, Renewable, Energy, and Electricity).

Play a round for a playground

Land O' Lakes, FL - Connerton Elementary School is hosting its first annual Golf Tournament "Play A Round for our Playground."

The tournament will be held at The Groves Golf & Country Club in Land O' Lakes on Sunday, May 15 at 12:30 p.m.

"Fired up Fridays" comes to an end

New Port Richey, Florida - They've been doing it since April 8.

They call it "Fired Up Fridays."

Members of United School Employees of Pasco have held weekly demonstrations on the side of the road.

It has taken place all over the county. 

They are calling it a protest for what they say are education attacks by Governor Rick Scott and other lawmakers.

The union held the very last of it's rallies on Friday afternoon.

Special School Board Workshop called to discuss budget

The District School Board of Pasco County will hold a Special School Board Workshop on Wednesday, May 11 beginning at 9:30 a.m.

This workshop will focus exclusively on budgetary matters, and will be held at he District complex, building 3, training room B.
