Protest rallies planned throughout Pasco County

Pasco County, Florida -- United School Employees of Pasco (USEP) is holding a series of public Save Our Schools rallies at major intersections and legislators offices around the county today from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

The rallies will serve as a protest of proposed legislation and budget cuts that will, according to the organization, "cripple public education." Today is the last Friday before the legislative session begins, so legislators are all expected to still be in Pasco County.

Pasco County School Board draws heat

Land O' Lakes, FL -- Imagine Charter School's request to increase the number of students it is allowed to enroll was rejected Tuesday by the Pasco County School Board.


Many parents, who packed the school board's meeting last night in support of Imagine School were upset with the board's decision. 


The Land O' Lakes charter school wants to increase its maximum allowed enrollment to 650 students for 2011-12, up from 548. 

Lutz school wants to add a high school program

Lutz school wants to add a high school program

Lutz, FL -- Learning Gate Community School will seek a charter to begin a high school and plans to construct a new building for 7th - 12th graders.


The high school will get a new name and be located 2 miles from the existing campus in Lutz. Learning Gate has signed a lease to use a building located on Florida Avenue to hold classes there next year.


The school began as a private school back in 1983 and became a public charter in 2000 and currently has 572 students enrolled from kindergarten to 8th grade.


School officials say after the purchase of land, the new school should be built and ready to open in 2 years.

Last weekend for School Choice Open Enrollment

Pasco County, Florida -- 2011-2012 School Choice Open Enrollment Applications for in-county transfers will ONLY be accepted from February 1, 2011 through March 1, 2011.

Requests submitted prior to February 1st have been notified that the application was not accepted and it will be necessary to apply during the Open Enrollment period.

Requests to exit the county are accepted at any time.

PLEASE read the Informational Guidelines and retain a copy for your records before filling out the online registration form.

Pasco County Schools celebrate volunteers

Pasco County, Florida -- According the the Pasco County School Board, the 2010-2011 school year has been brightened for many students by effective, beloved volunteers donating their time throughout the school system. The stand-out volunteers were recently celebrated by a very special award.

The official school board website describes the tradition of the award in a press release:

Each year the Florida Department of Education sponsors the statewide Outstanding School Volunteer Award competition.  This year Pasco schools nominated 90 volunteers for the honor, significantly more than in past years.  There were so many great nominees; the judges had a difficult time selecting the top three winners! In the end, however, after a very difficult voting process, the panel elected Shelby Thompson, Kim Clark, and Margaret Francis this school year’s Youth, Adult and Senior Volunteers of the Year, respectively. Read on for a summation of each winner's achievements.

Pasco County to hire two school principals

Pasco County, FL -- The Pasco County School District is looking to replace two of its principals who have been promoted and assigned to new positions within the district. 

Vanessa Hilton, principal at San Antonio Elementary, has been named the district's director of curriculum and instructional services.

David Salerno, principal at Seven Springs Middle, is transferring to become principal at Rushe Middle.

Pasco cafeteria manager wins award

Wesley Chapel, FL -- Vonnie Maples has been working in the Pasco County School system for 27 years and loves her job working in the school lunch room at Watergrass Elementary School.


She oversees the school cafeteria, which requires doing a fair amount of work on the computer, in addition to helping with other tasks.


Those tasks include serving up to 150 breakfast meals a day at Watergrass Elementary in addition to nearly 350 lunches and 40 adult meals.


Recently, she was named the Non-Instructional, Non-Bargaining Employee of the Year for Pasco County Schools.
