Pasco County Animal Services reopens for dog adoptions after Parvovirus outbreak

Pasco County, Florida-- Pasco County Animal Services has announced a grand reopening event after an outbreak of Parvovirus caused them to discontinue dog adoption services for nearly a month. The "Dog Independence Day" event will offer free adoptions of both, dogs and cats, this Saturday, July 27.

Dog adoptions initially stopped on June 26th after staff found four dogs with the virus- which is said to be very contagious, and transmitted through the feces and vomit of infected dogs and puppies. Symptoms typically include loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, lethargy, fever and depression.

Animal Services reps say their facility does test and vaccinate incoming dogs to prevent them from spreading, or getting Parvovirus, but the virus' 3-12 day incubation period can produce inaccurate, negative results that can be misleading.

The Facility planned to reopen for adoptions on July 9th, but the discovery of four more dogs with the virus on July 6th forced them to prolong their preventative closure.

Finally, after cleaning and disinfecting areas to reduce potential exposure, and waiting the time of the incubation period to re-test all four-legged friends at their facility, Pasco County Animal Services reps say they are really looking forward to Saturday's "Dog Independence Day."

“We are excited about the reopening of our dog adoptions and are grateful to our dedicated staff and volunteers who have worked diligently during this challenging time," said Dr. Suzanne Salichs, Assistant County Administrator for Public Services. "We have dozens of amazing dogs and cats that are ready to go to their forever homes.”

The event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. at the Pasco County Animal Services Facility, 19640 Dogpatch Lane, in Land O’Lakes.
