Lutz school earns prestigious environmental award

Lutz, Florida -- A Lutz school was among 78 schools in 29 states named as first-ever Green Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education Monday morning.

According to the DOE, Learning Gate Community School was recognized for their commitment to reducing environmental impacts, improving the health and academic performance of students and staff, and increasing the number of graduates that are environmentally and sustainability literate.

Each and every Sunday at the new Learning Garden at Peace Hall which is located near Sims Park, you will learn from volunteers about permaculture.

On Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., come out to downtown New Port Richey Earth Day event in the courtyard between City Hall and the city's library located at 5919 Main Street.

EcoFest 2012 is a community event organized by Learning Gate Community School to celebrate the many businesses, organizations, and individuals in the Tampa Bay area dedicated to the principles of sustainability - Ecology, Equity and Economy.

Michelle Northrup of Learning Gate Community School says there will be over one hundred vendors contributing to this event. Some of the vendors include Lowry Park Zoo, Fresh Produce, and MOSI.

Dances with Dirt returns to Pasco’s Green Swamp

The event will feature lots of great wilderness trail running and walking with what we call, “Stupid spots”, like when there is no trail at all (bushwhack), or as you run through a couple of rivers, yikes!

"Art of Recycling" Art Competition

Pasco County -- Some very creative high school students will be winning some cash for creating art while "going green".

On Feb. 3, students from all over Pasco County will drop off original art examples such as paintings, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, wearable art and architecture that have an environmental theme and utilize 70% recycled materials.

The artwork is then put on display and the public can vote on the artwork beginning Feb. 6.
