Zephyrhills, Florida -- On Saturday, Feb. 9, two P.E. teachers from West Zephyrhills Elementary will host a one-mile race for students ages 5-18.

The idea for the inaugural Merrill Lynch Bulldog Dash came about when teachers Michael Dodge and Tim Carter saw a need for a local race centered around school-aged children.

The race will be held at Zephyrhills High School and consists of a course around the track and school campus. The race is open to students from all schools.

Awards will be given to the top three boy and girl finishers.

Registration for the event is now open and will remain open through race day. The cost is $10 and includes a custom race T-shirt.

Those who enter by Feb. 1 will receive a shirt on race day. If you register after Feb. 1, you will have to wait longer to receive your shirt in the mail.

Door prizes include gift cards from Publix, Beef 'o' Brady's, Sonny's Real Pit Bar-B-Q, Applebee's and more.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the WZES Runners Club Inc., a non-profit organization made up of boys and girls ages 6-12 from West Zephyrhills Elementary. The club has nearly 50 runners that practice the mile run and other drills bi-weekly. Race funds will help purchase heart rate monitors and sports watches to improve the students' running skills.
