Zephyrhills man saved by groundbreaking lung surgery

Zephyrhills man saved by groundbreaking lung surgery

Zephyrhills, FL — A Zephyrhills man is returning to normal life for the first time since he fell off his bike in 2008.

James Austin suffered a contusion to his lung when he fell and was hospitalized for months.  Doctors believe the blood thinners he was taking for a heart condition may have caused complications, including an air leak in his lung.  Air leaks are common complications after surgery where portions of the lung have been cut.

Austin had two surgery options to fix the leak, but both involved complications and risks of another surgery.  Instead, thoracic surgeon Dr. Eric Sommers took a new approach: the IBV Valve System.

IBV valves are small, umbrella-shaped medical devices about the size of a spider.  They are placed in the valve to reduce or stop air leaks and allow tissue in the lung to seal.
