Pilot identified in Pasco plane crash

Land O' Lakes, Florida -- Pasco County Sheriff's Office deputies have identified the pilot involved in yesterday's crash in Land O' Lakes.

Deputies say Andreas Wendel, 48, was a Swiss citizen and a pilot for Edelweiss Air in Bassersdorf, Switzerland. He had no relatives in the U.S.

Wendel was killed after his Cessna 172 went down in a rural area of Land O' Lakes on Saturday. The sheriff's office told 10 News it received a call from Tampa International Airport before 3 a.m. saying it had lost an aircraft from its radar.

The PCSO aviation unit was able to located the crashed plane in pasture land off Bexley Road. It was reportedly headed from Pensacola to Tampa Executive Airport, formerly known as Vandenberg Airport.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the FAA.
