Tourism Development Council Welcomes New Member

Pasco County, Florida -- Board of County Commissioner Chairman Ted Schrader, also Chairman of the Tourist Development Council, nominated Kyle Von Kohorn, manager of the Holiday Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott, to be appointed to the Tourist Development Council (TDC).  The Board unanimously approved Von Kohorn to the TDC on August 27, 2013.

Von Kohorn attained his bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a minor in Entrepreneurship from University of North Florida in December 2011. An internship provided him the opportunity to work at a Springhill Suites by Marriott in his hometown of Vero Beach, FL. While there he says, "I learned every department within the hotel, from maintenance to breakfast, from front desk to housekeeping. When the company heard of my expected graduation they approached me with a job offer as Operations Manager at a Springhill Suites in Lake Charles, LA."

Later, in that internship there was a time frame of 3 months (March through May) where he acted as Interim General Manager, while Hotel Equities searched to replace the previous GM. It was at this time, he became heavily involved in the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). He worked closely with the hotelier's in the community as well as the TDC to bring in sporting events, boat shows, Mardi Gras festivals, craft shows, etc.

In August 2012, Hotel Equities had a General Manager position come available at a Hampton Inn in Okeechobee, FL. Von Kohorn applied and interviewed for the position. Within the month, his offer letter was signed and he was moving back down to Florida.

He found Okeechobee to be a different kind of market, and a difficult one at that. The main industry was dairy, beef, and citrus with not much corporate travel to the area. They had their fair share of fisherman, hunters and tourists venture to the small town of Okeechobee. However, joining the Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council and the TDC board proved to be instrumental in the success of the hotel.

Being a small town with a population of 30,000, he sat on the TDC board with six other members. Once a month the TDC would meet to discuss possible opportunities to bring events into town. One of the main attractions was, of course, Lake Okeechobee, therefore they were presented with numerous bass tournament sponsorship opportunities.
