Pasco County girl's name inspires holiday giving tradition

Land O' Lakes, Florida -- A 7-year-old girl is bringing comfort to people during the holidays, in the form of soup.

Hundreds of cans of Campbell's Soup are stacked in the McElaney family's patio in Land O' Lakes. Another Campbell is responsible for most of them -- 7-year-old Campbell McElaney. She is the face behind the Campbell's Cans project.

The holiday canned soup drive began six years ago at Campbell's first birthday party. Instead of presents her parents April and TJ encouraged guests to bring cans of soup -- Campbell's brand, of course. The cans were donated to Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa.

"It's really a lesson for the kids that's she's inviting and our family and friends that we do need to think about others and not just ourselves," said April McElaney, Campbell's mother. "We have so much. We can give a little bit back."

"I used to usally collect hundreds," said Campbell. "But after last year we're going for thousands now."

They are well on their way.  Just a few days after the official start of the canned soup drive, the collection was already at more than 950  cans! Two donations sites have been set up to collect cans of soup:

Ealier this year, Campbell was honored with a Kids Are Heroes award from St. Joseph's Hospital for her selflessness and good citizenship.
