Don't miss: 'Take a Photo of a Farm Day'

Dade City -- The Animal Rights Foundation of Florida is encouraging Floridians to grab their cameras and visit the nearest factory farm on "Take a Photo of a Farm Day." The first-ever event was inspired by legislation introduced by State Senator Jim Norman during the 2011 Florida legislative session that, as originally proposed, would have made it a crime to take photos or video of a farm. The bill passed the Florida Senate, but was not considered by the Florida House of Representatives.

According to Sen. Norman, the bill was introduced at the request of Wilton Simpson, the owner of a factory egg farm in Dade City. ARFF will hold a kick-off event at the entrance to Mr. Simpson's  farm on Saturday, August 27 at noon. The Simpson Farms are located at 21310 US Highway 98 in Dade City.

"Take a Photo of a Farm Day" is a lighthearted event with a serious purpose: to highlight an unconstitutional attack on First Amendment rights, and to increase public awareness of the suffering of millions of chickens and cows in factory farms in Florida.

"It is clear that the owners of factory farms do not want the public to see how animals are treated inside the facilities," said ARFF Communications Director Don Anthony. "Sen. Norman has said he will reintroduce his bill next year. This may be your last chance to legally take a photo of a factory farm in Florida!"

ARFF expects a small crowd at its kick-off event, but for those who may not be able to attend the event in Dade City, ARFF has sent a short list of industrial-sized dairy, egg and poultry farms in Florida to its membership. The list can be downloaded here.
